5 Intangible Christmas Gifts: The Real Reason for this Season

I’m sure you’ve heard it all before—“don’t forget the reason for this season.” And we try not to. But sometimes it’s just easy to get caught up in the holiday rush, to lose the true meaning of Christmas in the midst of a crowded mall or your child’s lengthy Christmas lists.

These things—going shopping for presents, attending Christmas parties, decorating your Christmas tree, etc.—are not a sin within themselves. We just have to keep in mind that these tangible objects are not the reason that we celebrate Christmas each year.

Mary, Did You Know?

Can you imagine what it would have been like to be Mary? To be told that you were chosen to bear God’s only Son?

It’s not like Mary knew it was coming. She was just an average girl leading an ordinary teenage life. No, she didn't attend a public high school every day. She didn't have a Facebook account—or even WiFi, for that matter. Now that’s hard to imagine!

However, I’m sure she had many of the same emotions that every teen experiences: Feelings of rejection, failure, depression, perhaps even loneliness. She could have even been struggling to find a purpose for her life.

I can imagine God watching her and thinking, “Mary, you have no idea. You can’t even comprehend all that I have in store for you.”

I wonder if—when God sees us crying out to Him—he thinks the same thing:If only you knew what I have in store for you. If only you knew, then you would face every day with a smile rather than a frown.”

How to Become a Teenage Author

I finally gained the courage to film my very first video, in which I share a little about my publishing journey and how you can become published as well. This is actually my third attempt at filming a video, so it would be great if you could let me know what you think! =)

Also, please don't forget to like the video and subscribe to my channel. Thanks!

(Please ignore the fact that my forehead is cut off. My editing program decided to chop it off for some reason ... lol)

I keep a pitcher of water in my office and regularly refill it when I'm writing.

Cave Secrets of the Pterodactyl is divided into two different parts. I call one of them Plot A, and that's the story the main character, Lydia Davis, is telling. The second I call Plot B, and there's a section of Plot B at the end of every chapter. That is the adventure Lydia is 'writing'. Check out an excerpt from Plot A here:

Chapter Three: Old as the Dinosaurs

“Yeppers, and this is my bookstore.” Pulling to a stop in front of a cute, little, old building, Miss Copper pointed with one hand as she turned off the engine with the other. “You might find it fun looking through the books today.”
Eeek! Now this was the kind of life I enjoyed—looking through books!
“Oh, and I don’t know if you kids like detective stories or not . . .” Unlocking the door to the bookstore, Miss Copper turned mainly to CJ and me.
“Yes, ma’am, we do!” Isaac was about as excited as I was.
“Well, I have a little mystery that you can help me solve if you want to.”
“Of course we do!” Annie didn’t want to be left out.
“Alright then, let’s sit down over here and I’ll tell you what’s going on, and then you kids can amuse yourselves while your mom and I chat.” Miss Copper didn’t say anything else until we were all sitting down.
“It’s like this,” she began to make eye contact with each of us in turn. “I bought this bookstore several months ago because
the previous owner is very elderly and wasn’t able to take care of it any more. His daughter, who was the one selling it, told me she thought she remembered that her dad had several old and rather expensive books, but she didn’t know where they were. Her dad doesn’t have a very good memory anymore, so she wasn’t able to ask him. I’ve looked for the books a little bit as I’ve been working here, but since I didn’t have any clue as to where they’d be, or even if they were here at all, I haven’t spent too much time on it.” Her eyes glowing with anticipation, she leaned closer to us. But she didn’t say anything.
“Well, what happened?” I asked, finally. “Last week I got a letter.” “A letter?” CJ looked as puzzled as I felt. “Yes. A letter. It was from the lady who sold me the book-store. The owner’s daughter. She said she had been going through some of her dad’s stuff, and she had found a note about the books.”
Miss Copper pulled a rather wrinkled envelope from her pocket. “Here, I’ll read what the note said:
The books are safe now.
I don’t have to worry about them being stolen, because I’ve hidden them.
Manuscripts that are almost as old as the dinosaurs (ha!) need to be taken care of.
I still can’t believe I got such a good bargain on them.”
“Is that all it said?” I asked when Miss Copper was done reading it. That didn’t seem to be much of a clue to me.

Stress Relievers: Guest Post by Author BeeBe Kauffman

A few years ago, I met an amazing family (a dad, mom, and daughter) at the Blue Ridge Mountain Christian Writers Conference. It was my first time attending a writer's conference, and my mom and I were completely clueless. I hadn't even made an appointment with any editors or agents, only because I thought there weren't any that represented my genre.

However, the Kauffmans immediately came to our rescue. They suggested that I sign up for appointments anyway, instructed me on how to do so, and kept my mom and I under their wing the entire conference. To put it short--if it wasn't for them, I would not have met my publisher.

With the daughter, Katy (author of Winning the Victory), at BWMCWC 2010: First year.

With the daughter, Katy (author of Winning the Victory), at BWMCWC 2012: Third year.

With that being said--I am so happy to announce that this family has now founded a publishing company, Lighthouse Bible Studies. Their books, Setting Things Right and Winning the Victory, were published exactly a month before mine. How crazy is that?!

So, with the college finals this week, I thought now would be the perfect time to have BeeBe Kauffman visit my blog and share how she overcomes stress.

Beebe Kauffman is a co-founder of Lighthouse Bible Studies. She has a bachelor's degree in business, but her heart is in teaching the Bible. She has developed application-based studies for the New Testament books (except Revelation which is event-based) and for Isaiah, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Daniel in the Old Testament. Isaiah: Setting Things Right is her first written study.

You can find BeeBe on her blog, Lessons From Home.

"Stress" is the word that will be written across the year 2013 in my memory. It began when my mom passed away in January. It was difficult to grasp the reality that she is no longer here, and it was hard to see all of her treasures being dispersed from her home. Then we had to do some work on her house to get it ready to sell. We had a few bumps along the way as we were trying to find contractors. A few weeks later, we started a new business, and not many of the scores of details were accomplished easily. We had learning curves, roadblocks, time delays, and a few "you-can't-do-this-before-you-do-that" detours. As the year rolled along, a few surprises were mixed in. I was getting overwhelmed.

One morning in my prayer time a thought that has helped me came to mind--"Use the stress release valves." I was more than willing to try anything, so I made a list of what those release valves might be: trust in God, prayer, praise songs, hope that God will make things better, reading Scripture, breaking a sizable task down into achievable steps and using them to sneak up on the goal, and looking at little problems from the big picture of life so the problems stay little in my mind. I also thought of three more: clean something and watch the sparkle for a few minutes, tickle someone and listen to the giggles, and sow some "happy" for someone.

When the pressures, pace, and problems of life crowd in around us a little too tightly, let's use one or more of the stress release valves to find a little relief.

~~~
What do your "stress release valves" look like? Do you have any that you would like to add to the list?
If God Loves Me, Then Why is My World Falling Apart?
If God loves me, shouldn't He prove His love by showering me with blessings? If God loves me, why hasn't he shown me that love through my early father? And why doesn't he tell the girls at school to stop bullying me?
These are questions that several teens struggle with daily. In fact, I had a teen reader of this column email me that exact question: Does God love me?
The answer? Yes. He loves you.
You then might ask, “So why does my life seem to be falling apart? I thought He was all-powerful. Can’t He prevent bad things from happening?”
Yes, God is all-powerful. But we have to remember that Satan controls the evil of this world. Not God. (Continue reading on Whole Magazine)
